The Banff International Literary Translation Centre is a three-week residency program offering literary translators an opportunity to focus on a current project, consult with experienced translators, network with colleagues in an international literary forum and, in some cases, spend time with the writer whose work they are translating.

Asymptote, a new international online journal dedicated to literary translation led by a  team of good people from divers parts of the world (Germany, Singapore, Taiwan and the U.S.), is currently seeking submissions of translated fiction, poetry, non-fiction, drama, and essays in English about authors who should be more well known to the English-speaking world.

What differentiates Asymptote from other magazines is that we not only intend to display the original text after the translation, but we also encourage translators (especially of poems) to provide MP3 recordings of a reading of the original text. We even have a visual poetry section where we showcase the intrinsic visual characteristics of one particular non-English language.

The United Nations will be holding a competitive examination for the recruitment of English-language interpreters tentatively on 12 and 13 January 2011.

Applicants for the examination must have:
•English as their main language
•An excellent knowledge of French and Russian or Spanish.

Candidates who are successful in this examination will be placed on a roster from which existing and future vacancies in the Interpretation Service in New York, Geneva, Vienna, and Nairobi will be filled.

Applications for this examination must be received by 10 December 2010.

The world's 6,000 distinct human languages include at least a hundred sign languages, according to James Woodenlegs, who is working with sign language scholars to document and preserve "hand talk" or "sign talk," the language used by both deaf and hearing Indians from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico for 200 years or possibly much longer.

Read more about how scholars are now conducting field research, supported by the National Science Foundation, to find current users of hand talk and compile a dictionary, as well as drawing upon historical films documenting the early uses of hand talk by dozens of tribes spread across North America.

 The AATIA Board of Directors has extended the deadline to submit ballots to November 30. If you are a current member, you should have received an electronic ballot from election@electionsonline.us. AATIA Headquarters is located at 201 East 2nd Street. Free parking is available at the Convention Center parking garage, which is on the west side of the building that houses our offices. Enter from Brazos Street, take a ticket and, when you exit, inform the attendant that you were attending an AATIA event, and sign a garage parking record sheet. There is no charge.
