ATA plans mile-high annual conference

The American Translators Association (ATA) will host its 51st Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado, on October 27-30. This three-day event will showcase diverse panel discussions, expert presentations, training workshops, and scholarly papers. Both general and language-specific sessions will be offered. The conference will also offer language professionals one of the best opportunities to network with colleagues. Additional activities will include a Job Marketplace, vendor exhibit hall, and ATA certification testing. 

Volunteer for immigration reform convention

Tha Austin Immigrants Rights Coalition (AIRC) needs several volunteers for the upcoming statewide convention for immigration reform on Saturday, Feb. 20, 1-5 p.m., at the Travis County Expo Center.  Please email if you are interested in volunteering for the following positions:

  • experienced simultaneous interpreters
  • welcome table staffers (to help with sign-in, hand out programs, and sign out translation headsets)
  • peacekeepers (to ensure the safety of conference participants)

Community interpreters to meet in Vancouver

Vancouver, British Columbia, will host an international conference May 6–8, 2009, that is designed to help interpreters understand the impact of globalization and how they can strengthen their organizations in order to meet their service goals.

Dynamic keynote speakers, exciting multi-disciplinary panels, and interactive breakout sessions will explore international best practices, innovations, and
improved services for our new global community.

The conference will offer an opportunity to learn from industry leaders, network with colleagues, and share perspectives on the changing face of community interpreting. Full details.

  • ATA picks San Antonio for 2013 conference

    ata-logo The American Translators Association has selected the site for the 2013 annual conference: San Antonio’s Marriott Rivercenter Hotel on the famous Riverwalk. Tentative dates are November 6 – 9.

    The last time the association met in Texas was 1994, when Austin hosted the conference.

    Orlando is the site of this year’s meet. The association will hold conferences in New York City in 2009 (ATA’s 50th anniversary), Denver in 2010, Boston in 2011, and San Diego in 2012.

  • Diaz to keynote TAPIT conference

    Esther Diaz Esther Diaz has been tapped to deliver the keynote address for the Medical Friday and TAPIT Conference, to be held on September 12 – 14 in Nashville.

    Sponsored by the Tennessee Association of Professional Interpreters and Translators (TAPIT), the three-day conference will offer practical, actionable tools for judiciary, medical, and community interpreters and translators.

    Diaz will also speak on “Women’s Health, the Digestive System, Medical Terminology” and “National Certification: Where do we stand?” Other topics include the following:

    hita-logo In honor of International Translation Day 2008, the Houston Interpreters and Translators Association (HITA) will host a conference for interpreters and translators on September 27 in Houston. The theme of the conference, chosen by the International Federation of Translators (FIT) for the this year’s International Translation Day, will be "Terminology: Words Matter."

    Professionals from various fields – including law, education, and health care – will present on topics related to the use of specialized terminology in their given fields. Participants will receive glossaries of specialized terminology from each session.

  • NCIHC, MING meet back-to-back in Atlanta

    ncihc NCIHC, MING meet back to back in Atlanta The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care  (NCIHC) will hold its 2nd Annual Membership Meeting at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 5-6, 2008. It will be followed by the Southeast Regional Interpreters Conference, held by the Medical Interpreter Network of Georgia (MING), at the same location on June 6-7, 2008.

    MING The NCIHC offers a brochure on this year’s meeting and a report on last year’s event. Register and get hotel information. Information about submitting presentation proposals, exhibiting, or sponsoring may be viewed on the website or obtained by contacting a representative of NCIHC.
