AATIA member Liliana Valenzuela will conduct a workshop class as a core faculty member of the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference the week of July 12–19, 2009, in Port Townsend, Washington.

FROM CHILE TO CHIHUAHUA: RECENT REFORMS TO CRIMINAL PROCEDURE IN
LATIN AMERICA

While much has been written in Spanish, and to a certain extent in English, about the criminal procedure reforms sweeping Latin America, scant information is available that describes the novel process itself. During this session the speaker will provide a detailed review of one of the most successful such reforms in the region, the revamped system of criminal prosecution in Chile, and
its sister reforms in Oaxaca and Chihuahua. Parallels will be drawn with the U.S. system. An extensive glossary will be provided.

The four-hour session will be in English and Spanish.

Registration is now open for the Tools for Translators workshop, to be held on Saturday, September 6th.  This all-day, two-part workshop, presented by translator Jost Zetzsche, will offer expert advice on which software tools you’ll need to save time and boost your productivity, the best way to use these tools, and which popular tools you can do without.

The morning session will provide general information on how to get the most out of your computer, while the afternoon session will focus on specific translation environment tools (TEnTs), such as Trados and Déjà Vu. Participants may attend just one session or both. ATA-certified participants will earn three continuing education points per session.

In addition to working as a translator and a localization consultant, Jost Zetzsche publishes The Tool Kit, a biweekly computer newsletter for translators, and is the author of The Translator’s Tool Box: A Computer Primer for Translators. He has given similar workshops to translator groups all around the country, always to rave reviews. Most recently, Jost was one of the presenters at the ATA Translation Tools Seminar in Boston. The final issue of The AATIA Letter is now online. This (July 2008) issue provides advance details about September’s Translation Tools workshop, led by Jost Zetzsche, and AATIA’s July 12 member meeting, which will spotlight Austin’s Sister Cities.

A great overview of how to operate a translation business was recently addressed at a workshop titled, “Business Basics for Freelancers.” Sponsored by AATIA, the workshop was held on June 14 at the International Center of Austin. As a newcomer to the translation profession, I found the training most helpful. Running a successful translation business takes more than just having expertise in your language pair(s)!

The training was presented by Ted Wozniak, who maintains that operating an effective translation business involves learning how to establish a “business presence,” advertising, finding work, getting paid, keeping tax records, bookkeeping, among other useful topics.
