United Nations 2012 competitive examinations for English-language translators and editors

Are you overwhelmed with multiple projects? Do you want more control in your day? Come to Adriana Bardin-Prestwood's presentation on techniques of Project Management and get organized!
Adriana's presentation will take place at the AATIA Membership Meeting this Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00 at the International Center of Austin (see address and directions in column at right).
The Spanish Special Interest Group will also meet this Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00 at the same location. Marta Blumenthal and Joan Tuttle-Vargas, from the Language Services unit at the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, will talk about proofreading your Spanish translations.
Both meetings are open to the public. Free parking is available at the Convention Center parking garage, which is on the east side of the building that houses our offices. Enter from Brazos Street, inform the attendant that you are attending an AATIA event, and sign a garage parking record sheet. There is no charge.

In recognition of St. Jerome, the principle translator of the Vulgate Bible and patron saint of translators, the AATIA will host a historic International Translation Day celebration.
There will be entertainment from the Executive Director of the Austin Classical Guitar Society, Dr. Matthew Hinsley, the lively and funny Gabacha-chas led by Maurine Mclean and Lisa Rogers, and an exciting samba exhibition with audience participation led by Rebekah Fowler.
A rich variety of delicacies and beverages will be offered for your pleasure.
Free parking is available at the Convention Center Parking Lot. Enter by turning north on Brazos from East 1st Street, going 2/3 of a block, entering the CC Parking lot on the right, and telling the attendant that you are with the AATIA. See the map in the right column.

The next membership meeting of the AATIA will feature a special presentation by Jorge Ungo, Southwest Region Manager for Pacific Interpreters, current President of the Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters and Translators (TAHIT), and a board member and membership co-chair of the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC). From wikis and blogs to social bookmarking – this presentation will demystify the world of the Web 2.0 to demonstrate how translators and interpreters can connect more effectively with colleagues and share important tools and resources.
At the meeting this Saturday, the candidates for the 2010 board will share their platforms and plans. Don’t miss this opportunity to inform yourself in preparation for the upcoming on-line election.

A competitive examination for the recruitment of Spanish-language translators and précis writers will be held in
September 2009 in New York, Geneva, and other locations. The date has been set tentatively for September 4th. The purpose of this examination is to establish a roster from which present and future vacancies for Spanish-language translators and précis writers at United Nations Headquarters in New York and at other duty stations will be filled. Candidates who are successful in this examination will be included in the roster and may be appointed to fill vacancies as they occur in New York, Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, and Santiago. The United Nations will hold competitive examinations in early February 2009 (exact dates to be announced) to recruit English-language Editors and Translators/Précis-writers. Interested applicants must have:
• A perfect command of English, which must be their main language
• Excellent knowledge of French and one additional official United Nations language (i.e., Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish)
• A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status
Applicants may sit either or both examinations, which will be held on successive days. Successful candidates may be recruited by the United Nations to fill vacancies as they occur at Headquarters in New York or at duty stations in Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva, Nairobi, Santiago or Vienna.
